Phronesis #1: Conversation Reframing Tool
Transforming problems into opportunities through collective practice
This post is part of the Phronesis section, which introduces methods, tools, and practices for change. If you are new and want to know more about phronesis meaning read here.
When facing problems, it's crucial to shift our perspective to find solutions. However, sometimes groups get stuck in the root cause analysis process, which can generate more conflicts and problems instead of solutions. That's why reframing is a powerful approach to navigate challenging situations. By reframing the problem, we can uncover opportunities within it and overcome biases collectively.
There are various tools available for reframing, and one of the most effective tools I have used in several workshops is the Problem to Opportunity Tree from the Taos Institute. You can learn to use it in just two minutes. Check out this video.
To use the tool, it's important to give the group time to discuss the problem, as moving too quickly to opportunities may cause individuals to feel unheard.
Reframing requires constant practice, and I approach it as a game of finding new perspectives about problems. Asking "What if..." questions helps me open up to new perspectives. It's important to note that due to our mental models, we are usually biased. The collective practice of reframing has numerous benefits, such as reducing bias and exploring new perspectives when we build upon each other's ideas. I recommend practicing reframing with a group of friends, as it can be both fun and supportive.
